This approach focuses on the human condition as a whole and addresses ultimate human concerns such as the meaning or meaninglessness of life, suffering, crisis, death, anxiety, isolation, limitations, dilemmas, sense of identity, freedom of choice, responsibility, etc. The therapist values clients’ lived experiences and subjective meanings. The general goals of existential psychotherapy are to:

  • Facilitate the client's self-exploration and growth in-depth

  • Help clients find meaning and inner peace in life

  • Acknowledge the limitations of existence and dilemmas in life

  • Help clients realize that they oftentimes have more freedom to make conscious choices than they thought, and they have the ability to shape their own beliefs and values in life without being confined by rigid dogma and doctrine

  • Live a more authentic and meaningful life
